A girl I dated in college said she used to sit in a closet and cry thinking about Kurt Cobain killing himself.

Another thing about her, one night she called me at 4 in the morning after she’d been out all night with her old high school friends, she’d done a lot of cocaine and she’d never done it before, she asked if she could come over “in case I’m gonna like die or something,” she said, and she came over, and after we had sex that’s when she played me “Postcards from Italy” by Beirut. I had never heard it before, and I said right away, “How have I never heard this before!”

I tried to write honestly how I felt about her one time and I showed it to a friend who was in grad school, a poet, and he said I was being kind of creepy, that it was creepy how I wrote about her. I didn’t think it was creepy.

I guess what I want to do is, I want to write about a relationship as it’s happening and never publish any of it.

A Story Featuring A Fictional Version of My Ex-Girlfriend As I Imagine Her In Her Teenage Years

A Fictional Version of My Ex-Girlfriend As I Imagine Her In Her Teenage Years pictures being inside waves: a weight shoving her scrawny limbs down toward the packed sand and shells. The nerve endings in her scalp tingling. 

 She walks past lines of blankets and umbrellas alongside A Fictional Version of Her Dad. On her silver one-piece bathing suit, a spiral of stars every color of the rainbow, each smaller than the next. Her pink sandals hit her heels flap flap flap. A Fictional Version of Her Dad wears dark blue trunks and no shirt, his eyes barely visible behind wrap-around sunglasses. 

 They had parked on the bluff. From that altitude, everyone on the beach and in the water appeared to be colorful abstractions. 

 A Fictional Version of Her Dad removes the towel from across his broad shoulders with one hand and tosses it over A Fictional Version of My Ex-Girlfriend As I Imagine Her In Her Teenage Years’s head.

“You ready to swim?”  

She shakes her head no, takes the towel off her head and discards it on his chest.  

“You told your mother you wanted to go swimming.”  

They find an empty place for their towels a few feet from the shallows where A Vaguely Metaphorical Boy uses a stick to write his name in the wet sand.  

“Do you want to build a sandcastle?”  

A Fictional Version of My Ex-Girlfriend As I Imagine Her in Her Teenage Years sits at the foot of her blanket. She hunches over, her small shoulders creating shadows on the sand. The Vaguely Metaphorical Boy lies down in the shallows until the water soaks over him and his name. He springs to his feet and runs away.  

When they lived on Ocean Drive, A Fictional Version of My Ex-Girlfriend As I Imagine Her in Her Teenage Years used to play hide-and-go-seek with The Metaphorical Neighbor Boy. The Metaphorical Neighbor Boy had curly blonde hair and pointy teeth. A Fictional Version of My Ex-Girlfriend As I Imagine Her in Her Teenage Years forced him to play by her rules, because A Fictional Version of Her Mom had seen him hogging the ball once and told her not to put up with that. So she kept the ball most of the time, and he chased her around the yard like a dog after food.  

When they were tired of that, they climbed into the little plastic wading pool. They couldn’t both fit, so each allowed one leg to dangle over the side. That was when they were happiest, when they stopped chasing each other and sat in the water. They traced their little fingers in it and picked out the specks of dirt. They looked at themselves in it and resisted the urge to dunk the other’s head. Afterwards he’d blurt something and dash through the hole in the fence back to his yard. When A Fictional Version of Her Mom and A Fictional Version of Her Dad got back, they told her Dad was moving out.  

A Fictional Version of My Ex-Girlfriend As I Imagine Her in Her Teenage Years doesn’t want to get in the water.  “I’m not getting in.”
